WHAT IS THE BIGGEST WASTE OF TIME IN YOUR LIFE?
Time is what we want most but what we use worst. — William Penn
Each one of us has just 24 hours in a day. But what really makes the difference is that, how these 24 hours are being used.
Using our time wisely increases our productivity and brings us more close to our success goals. It is important to add value to our time. Habits are not formed in a day. It takes so many days to inculcate a new habit. No one sets out trying to form habits that waste their time and hold them back from achieving their goals.
Yet most people end up with a couple, or a lot, of them.
The first thing towards getting rid of time-wasting habits is to address them. It is only after the self-evaluation that you should start taking action.
Set yourself up for success by cutting these biggest time wasters from your life, and you may find you have more time than you realize.
1. Multitasking
The human brain isn’t designed to multitask. Trying to do more than one thing at a time actually diminishes our productivity. Our brain has to slow down as it switches between tasks, and this makes us less efficient.
In a nutshell, multitasking actually decreases our total productivity by 40%. Shifting between two tasks without really focusing on either one. The result is that neither task has our undivided attention, so neither will be done to the best of our ability.
Alternate solution :
Avoid multitasking at all costs. It’s holding you back. Instead, focus on one task at a time and commit yourself totally to that one task and you will see the difference.
2. Too much socializing
There’s nothing wrong with socializing with colleagues, friends, neighbors, and relatives. But if you aren’t careful, it’s easy to lose valuable work time interacting.
Over socializing and over-talking can eat up your valuable time, which can otherwise be used in some productive tasks.
Alternate solution :
Set limits to socializing. And try to hold yourself back from unnecessary discussions.
3. Debate on meal deciding
Eating is an everyday process but taking time to figure out what to eat, ends up sucking up so much of our time. Especially when there is more than one person involved in the decision process.
Alternate solution :
- Meal planning.
- Make a list of what you will eat every day for the week. This will probably save a lot of time.
4. Searching for missing items
Most of us, especially ‘men’, spend at least 10 minutes every day looking for their keys/wallet/phone, etc.
Apart from wastage of time, this brings distraction from our usual daily routine. Eliminating this time-wasting habit can make our mornings less stressful and more productive.
Alternate Solution :
Allocate a dedicated place for every small thing and put your necessities there as soon as you end up using them. Then start working on taking mental notes about where you’re getting something down. This will train your brain to start remembering those actions so you can locate things later.
